An Investigation on Flexible Communications in Publish/Subscribe Services
نویسندگان
چکیده
Novel embedded and ubiquitous infrastructures are being realized as collaborative federations of heterogeneous systems over widearea networks by means of publish/subscribe services. Current publish/subscribe middleware do not jointly support two key requirements of these infrastructures: timeliness, i.e., delivering data to the right destination at the right time, and flexibility, i.e., enabling heterogeneous interacting applications to properly retrieve and comprehend exchanged data. In fact, some middleware solutions pay more attention to timeliness by using serialization formats that minimize delivery time, but also reduce flexibility by constraining applications to adhere to predefined data structures. Other solutions adopt XML to improve flexibility, whose redundant syntax strongly affects the delivery latency. We have investigated the consequences of the adoption of several lightweight formats, which are alternative to XML, in terms of flexibility and timeliness. Our experiments show that the performance overhead imposed by the use of flexible formats is not negligible, and even the introduction of data compression is not able to manage such issue.

On a Framework for Complex and ad hoc Event Management over Distributed Systems
Internet-based communications have amazingly evolved in recent years. As a consequence, the number – and complexity – of distributed systems which provide access to services and applications has dramatically increased. As long as these services have been extended to support an increasing number of communication media (voice, audio, video, ...) and systems, ad hoc communication protocols and met...
متن کاملSurvey of Publish Subscribe Event Systems
The Internet has changed considerably the scale of distributed systems, motivating the demand for more flexible communication models and systems. Individual point-to-point and synchronous communications, which tend to lead to rigid and static applications, are making way for the more loosely coupled interaction such as is supported by a publish-subscribe paradigm. In this paper, we define a tax...
متن کاملThe Federation of Critical Infrastructure Information via Publish-Subscribe Enabled Multisensor Data Fusion
The art and science of multisensor data fusion is the emerging foundation for the development of next generation network-centric decision support systems, including critical infrastructure protection. These challenging technical objectives require the cooperative signal processing of a federation of critical infrastructures. Publish-subscribe architectures provide process-to-process messaging i...
متن کاملDifferential Data Protection for Dynamic Distributed Applications
We present a mechanism for providing differential data protection to publish/subscribe distributed systems, such as those used in peer-to-peer computing, grid environments, and others. This mechanism, termed “security overlays”, incorporates credential-based communication channel creation, subscription and extension. We describe a conceptual model of publish/subscribe services that is made conc...
متن کاملA web based Publish-Subscribe framework for mobile computing
The growing popularity of mobile devices is permanently changing the Internet user’s computing experience. Smartphones and tablets begin to replace the desktop as the primary means of interacting with various information technology and web resources. While mobile devices facilitate in consuming web resources in the form of web services, the growing demand for consuming services on mobile device...
